Why Am I Always Clearing My Throat?

man clearing his throat.

Have you noticed someone who constantly clears their throat before speaking? Maybe it’s become such a habit, they don’t even realize they’re doing it. Now think about yourself; do you often feel the need to clear your throat or cough before you talk? While it might seem like a harmless habit, there could be underlying reasons behind it. Let’s explore the possible causes and what you can do to address the question: “Why am I always clearing my throat?”

Causes of clearing your throat

There are many concrete reasons why you may be regularly clearing your throat.

Allergies

If it happens more frequently in the spring and fall, it could be from environmental allergies like pollen. It could be caused by dust, pet dander, or other triggers. Allergies increase the amount of mucus in your throat causing the need to clear your throat of the excess mucus. It leads to post nasal drip which also tickles your throat.

Try over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, or nasal rinsing to stop the discomfort. Try drinking more water to thin out the mucus. If the problem persists beyond 2 weeks, it might necessitate an appointment with an ENT specialist.

GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a common cause of throat clearing and coughing. Stomach acid reaches back up into the esophagus irritating it and causing a sore throat.

Avoid certain foods like tomatoes and acidic fruits. Waiting several hours before going to sleep helps. You might need GERD prescription medications to manage the problem.

Some medications

Certain blood pressure meds can induce a tickle in your throat leading to coughing and frequent throat clearing.

Talk to your physician about a possible substitution.

Swallowing problems

Sometimes you may feel like something is caught in your throat as you eat. Maybe you get hoarse, choke or cough while eating. This is known as Dysphagia which can be caused by muscle damage.

An ENT specialist can diagnose this issue with a procedure known as a Fiberoptic Endoscopic  Evaluation of Swallowing, or FEES. An endoscope is placed in the nose and moves down to just above the larynx and throat to evaluate what is affecting the swallowing.

A subconscious habit

The more you do it, the more your throat feels irritated, and the cycle continues. It can occur especially when you are anxious or stressed.

When to seek medical care

It is important to seek medical care when:

There can be an underlying condition like damage to your vocal chords, so don’t wait to see an ENT specialist. Similarly, respiratory infections like bronchitis or asthma need treatment and can be the cause.

Find a local ENT specialist if you have concerns about your chronic throat clearing.
